Vincent Direct is
fast becoming the leader in Central Ohio as they strive for certification
by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This certification recognizes
printers and manufacturers whose management and production systems are
“sustainable” for the environment. “This certification
is not necessarily more expensive for our services and the benefits to
the environment are extremely important,” says Ty Vincent.
Sustainability is an economic state where the demands placed upon the
environment by people and commerce can be met without reducing the capacity
of the environment to provide for future generations. The goal
of sustainability is to manufacture and distribute printed products that
do not diminish natural resources and are not harmful to human life and
ecosystems. In order for Vincent Direct to meet these standards, every
aspect of their processes are being looked at and changed if necessary.
The following is a partial list of these process changes:
Product Related Issues:
Substrate/Paper recommendations—recycled fibers, chlorine bleaching,
low
VOC inks, and recyclability of certain adhesives. Most certified paper
combines
recycled with wood fiber. A percentage of the wood must come from forests
that
meet strict standards.
Prepress Issues:
Convert conventional workflow to digital, neutralize pH and recover silver.
Properly maintain and adjust equipment.
Test chemistry with environmental control devices.
Implement digital proofing systems.
Press Issues:
Utilize low VOC, vegetable oil-based and heavy metal free inks and coatings.
Utilize alcohol free, and substitute non-air toxic fountain solutions.
Utilize low VOC, low vapor pressure and non-toxic cleaning solutions.
Postpress/Bindery Issues:
Waste reduction by employing new automated equipment.
Capture all paper waste and recycle.
Plant/Facility Issues:
Doors, windows, insulation, roofing, capture rainwater for manufacturing
needs,
heating, ventilation, air conditioning, grounds, grass, parking lot, shrubs,
trees
and maintenance.
